When a Death Occurs
In the first hours after losing a loved one, it can be hard to know what to do next. This guide walks you through the immediate steps, and reminds you of the most important one: you can call Calvert Funeral Home at any hour, and we will help you with everything else.
The First Call
If your loved one passes at home without hospice care, call 911 first; if they were under hospice or hospital care, the staff will guide the initial steps. Then call us — day or night. We will bring your loved one into our care, answer your immediate questions, and schedule a time to meet when you're ready.
Meeting with the Funeral Director
Within a day or two, we'll sit down together to plan the arrangements. It helps to bring any pre-planning documents, a recent photograph, clothing for your loved one, and basic information for the death certificate — such as their date of birth, Social Security number, and parents' names. If something is missing, don't worry; we'll work through it together.
Notifying Family & Friends
Sharing the news is one of the hardest tasks, and you don't have to do it alone. Ask a few trusted family members or friends to help make calls. Once arrangements are set, we'll publish the obituary and service details on our website so everyone who loved them knows when and where to gather.
