Benefits & Paperwork After a Loss
After a loss, families face a surprising amount of paperwork — Social Security, insurance, banks, and more. Calvert Funeral Home helps you understand what needs to be done and files much of it with you, so nothing your family is entitled to slips through the cracks.
Social Security Benefits
As part of our service, we notify the Social Security Administration of your loved one's passing. Surviving spouses and dependent children may be eligible for a one-time death benefit as well as ongoing survivor benefits. Contact the SSA directly to apply — and we can help you understand what to ask for before you call.
Life Insurance Claims
Life insurance benefits are not paid automatically — a claim must be filed with each policy, along with a certified death certificate. Gather any policies your loved one held, including employer group coverage, and contact each insurer. In many cases, insurance proceeds can also be assigned to cover funeral expenses; ask us how this works.
Death Certificates & Other Details
Certified death certificates are needed for banks, insurance, property, and vehicle titles — most families need several copies, and we'll help you order the right number. In the weeks that follow, you'll also want to notify banks and credit card companies, the DMV, the post office, and utility providers. We provide a checklist so you can work through it one step at a time.
